At Stony Meadows, the relationship we build with our families doesn’t end when a puppy leaves our driveway. It grows. One of the most rewarding parts of what we do is receiving updates from our puppies—stories of new homes, new routines, and new adventures that remind us why responsible breeding matters so deeply.
Recently, we received a wonderful letter from a spirited little pup named Frankie, formerly known as Kiwi during her time with us. Frankie has settled into her forever home in Connecticut, and while her journey hasn’t been without bumps—quite literally—her letter is full of the joy, resilience, and personality that makes Mini Golden Retrievers such extraordinary companions.
A Letter from Frankie (Formerly Known as Kiwi)
Hi Ivan! It’s me, Frankie! (the puppy formally known as Kiwi).
I just love my new forever parents! They let me zoom around the yard, snuggle with me all the time (just to show their love 🙂), buy me lots of chew toys, and let me chase the Cat! (I love that!).
Things are going well up here in Connecticut, well, except for a little accident I had. You see, I had this idea that I wanted to jump up on the bed in their bedroom, jumped a little short of the target, and whacked my leg against the frame of the bed. Wow, did that hurt! Mom and Dad brought me to the vet to find I had broken two bones in my right hind leg. I had to go to the animal hospital for (a very expensive!) surgery. They put a titanium sheath and some screws in my leg (I wasn’t conscious for that part). They held me in the hospital overnight and Mom and Dad picked me up the next day. I was on antibiotics for a few weeks and had to wear a stupid cone over my head so I didn’t lick or bite the surgical area (I tried to let them know I’d be good but to no avail!).
Well, last week they took the stitches out (and no more cone-head!) and next week I go for my last x-ray. That should be the end of that! Mom and Dad bought me puppy steps next to the bed so I can climb up without jumping (I sure won’t do that again!).
I’m still on Pawtree so they are feeding me well, and I’m getting better with the peepee/poopie outside only thing. Sometimes I forget but they are patient with me.
Well, now you’re up to date on my new adventure! Thanks so much for reaching out. Send my love to all the gang for me and keep in touch!
Much love,
Frankie
A Note from Ivan and the Stony Meadows Team
Dear Frankie—and the whole Connecticut crew,
Thank you for writing! Honestly, this letter had us laughing, then holding our breath, then sighing with relief. That is quite an adventure for a young pup! We are so relieved to hear that your surgery went well and that the recovery is nearly complete. Titanium screws and all—you are officially tougher than most dogs we know.
What shines through most in your letter is not just your resilience, but the dedication of your Mom and Dad. They rushed you to the vet, stayed by your side through the recovery, and thought ahead to buy puppy steps so it never happens again. That kind of attentive, loving care is exactly what we hope for every Stony Meadows puppy. You landed in the right home, Frankie.
Keep chasing that cat (carefully!), zooming around the yard when the leg is fully healed, and soaking up every snuggle. We are so proud of the pup you are becoming.
With warmth,
Ivan and the Stony Meadows Team
What Frankie’s Story Teaches Us About Puppy Safety at Home
Frankie’s tumble is a good reminder that puppies—especially energetic Mini Goldens—are naturally curious and fearless. That combination can sometimes lead them into trouble. Here are a few practical steps every new puppy owner should take to keep their furry family member safe.
Use Pet Steps or Ramps Near Elevated Surfaces
Beds, sofas, and even car seats pose a real risk for puppies who haven’t yet developed the coordination to judge a jump accurately. Pet steps or ramps give them a safe, controlled way to reach their favorite spots. Frankie’s parents discovered this the hard way, but acted quickly—and that made all the difference.
Keep a Trusted Vet Relationship from Day One
Frankie’s parents wasted no time getting her to the vet after the incident. That quick action is credit to them. Knowing your nearest emergency animal hospital and having an established relationship with a local veterinarian are two things every new puppy owner should sort out before they need them.
Nutrition Supports Recovery
Frankie mentions she is still on Pawtree, the premium nutrition program we recommend for all our Stony Meadows puppies. During recovery, quality nutrition plays a meaningful role in healing. A diet built around the specific needs of a growing dog helps support bone health, immune function, and overall vitality—all of which matter even more when a pup is bouncing back from an injury.
Patience Is the Most Underrated Tool in Puppy Parenting
Frankie admits she sometimes forgets the outdoor potty rules—and her parents respond with patience. That kind of grace is not just good for house training. It builds trust. Puppies who feel safe and unjudged learn faster and bond more deeply. Frankie’s family clearly understands this.
The Resilience of the Mini Golden Retriever Temperament
What strikes us most about Frankie’s letter is her spirit. She went through surgery, weeks in a cone, and a long recovery—and her letter is still full of joy. That resilience is not an accident. It is a hallmark of the Mini Golden Retriever temperament.
These dogs are bred to be adaptable and emotionally steady. They take their cues from the people around them, which means a calm, loving household produces a calm, loving dog. Frankie’s quick emotional recovery from a genuinely difficult experience reflects both her breeding and the stable, affectionate environment her parents have created.
Mini Golden Retrievers typically weigh between 20 and 45 pounds—a size that is manageable enough for indoor life, yet sturdy enough to keep up with an active family. Their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel heritage gives them a gentle, intuitive nature, while their Golden Retriever lineage contributes that famous eagerness to please. The result is a dog that handles life’s ups and downs with remarkable grace.
Frankie Is Proof That the Right Home Changes Everything
Every letter we receive from our Stony Meadows families tells a slightly different story, but they all share the same heart. A puppy arrives, settles in, faces a few challenges, and thrives—because the family around them shows up. Frankie’s story is no different. Her parents did not hesitate when she needed care. They adapted, They invested, They made room for puppy steps and followed through on recovery protocols, all while staying patient through the potty training learning curve.
That is what great puppy ownership looks like.
